Quartz, is the second most abundant mineral found in the Earth's crust, after feldspar. Quartz comprises of a lattice of silica tetrahedra and has a hardness of 7 according to the Mohs scale. Its density is 2.65 g/cm³. Quartz belongs to the rhombohedral crystal system. Its ideal crystal shape is a six-sided prism that ends in a six-sided pyramid at each end. Quartz crystal appears massive and lacks the obvious crystal faces altogether, because of its nature of being twinned, distorted, or so inter-grown with adjacent crystals of quartz or other minerals.

There are many varieties of quartz. Pure Quartz is one variety, which is sometimes called clear quartz and is colorless or white in color and transparent or translucent appearance. Some common colored varieties of quartz are citrine, rose quartz, amethyst, smoky quartz, milky quartz, and other major varieties. Major Varieties of Quartz include Chalcedony, Agate, Onyx, Jasper, Aventurine, Tiger's eye, Rock crystal and Carnelian.

Well not all varieties of Quartz are naturally occurring. Prasiolite is one such variety of Quartz which is olive colored material produced by heat treatment. Natural prasiolite can also be found in Lower Silesia in Poland. Citrine occurs naturally, but a majority of citrine is heat-treated amethyst. Carnelian, yet another variety of Quartz is mostly heat-treated for deepening its color.

Due to natural Quartz being so often twinned, much of the quartz used in industry is synthesized. Large, flawless and un-twinned crystals are produced in an autoclave via the hydrothermal process; emeralds are also synthesized in this fashion. While these are still commonly referred to as quartz, the correct term for this material is silicon dioxide.

Quartz is an essential constituent of granite and other felsic igneous rocks. It is very common in sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and shale and is also present in variable amounts as an accessory mineral in most carbonate rocks. It is also a common constituent of schist, gneiss, quartzite and other metamorphic rocks. Because of its resistance to weathering it is very common in stream sediments and in residual soils. Quartz occurs in hydrothermal veins as gangue along with ore minerals. Large crystals of Quartz are found inpegmatites. Well-formed crystals may reach several meters in length and weigh hundreds of kilograms.

Now lets look at the history of this stone. The name "quartz" comes from the German "Quarz", which is of Slavic origin. Other sources insist the name is from the Saxon word "Querkluftertz", meaning cross-vein ore. Quartz is the most common material identified as the mystical substance maban in Australian Aboriginal mythology. It is found regularly in passage tomb cemeteries in Europe in a burial context, eg. Newgrange or Carrowmore in the Republic of Ireland. The Irish word for Quartz is grian cloch, which means 'stone of the sun'.

Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder believed quartz to be water ice, permanently frozen after great lengths of time. He supported this idea by saying that Quartz is found near glaciers in the Alps, but not on volcanic mountains, and that large Quartz crystals were fashioned into spheres to cool the hands. He also knew of the ability of quartz to split light into a spectrum. This idea persisted until at least the 1600s.

In the 17th century, Nicolas Steno's study of Quartz paved the way for modern crystallography. He discovered that no matter how distorted a Quartz crystal, the long prism faces always made a perfect 60 degree angle. Charles Sawyer invented the commercial quartz crystal manufacturing process in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. This initiated the transition from mined and cut quartz for electrical appliances to manufactured Quartz.

Quartz's piezoelectric properties were discovered by Jacques and Pierre Curie in 1880. The Quartz oscillator or resonator was first developed by Walter Guyton Cady in 1921. George Washington Pierce designed and patented Quartz crystal oscillators in 1923. Warren Marrison created the first Quartz oscillator clock based on the work of Cady and Pierce in 1927. Quartz crystals have piezoelectric properties, that is they develop an electric potential upon the application of mechanical stress. An early use of this property of Quartz crystals was in phonograph pickups. One of the most common piezoelectric uses of Quartz today is as a crystal oscillator. The Quartz clock is a familiar device using the mineral. The resonant frequency of a Quartz crystal oscillator is changed by mechanically loading it, and this principle is used for very accurate measurements of very small mass changes in the Quartz crystal microbalance and in thin-film thickness monitors.

And that is why it is still referred to as the 'gemstone of the rainbow' today. The name tourmaline comes from the Singhalese words 'tura mali'. In translation, this means something like 'stone with mixed colours', referring to the colour spectrum of this gemstone, which outdoes that of all other precious stones.

Black tourmaline accounts for the majority of tourmaline that has been found, but tourmaline in hues of blue, red, green, yellow and purple are also available. There is even a variety of tourmaline called "watermelon tourmaline" that is green tourmaline with pink tourmaline at its center. This variety is particularly beautiful for jewelry.


Unlike amethyst and topaz, tourmaline has escaped inordinate exploitation on the Brazilian market, probably because it is rarer and consequently more expensive. It is a mineral group of varying composition occurring in different colours, especially green, blue and grey. Pink specimens are known as rubellite.

Tourmaline has a deep brilliance and rich colouring. Transparent specimens being quite common, the stone is either cut en cabochon or faceted. Specimens with inclusions are used for beads.

Green tourmaline should not be confused with emerald, or red tourmaline with ruby. It has a wide distribution and is especially diffuse in Brazil and Madagascar.

No two tourmalines are exactly alike. This gemstone has an endless number of faces, and for that reason it suits all moods. No wonder that magical powers have been attributed to it since ancient times. In particular, it is the gemstone of love and of friendship, and is said to render them firm and long-lasting.

At that time, a beautiful young maiden named Amethyst was on her way to worship the Goddess Diana. Diana, knowing of Bacchus vow, turned Amethyst into a pillar of colorless quartz to protect her from the tigers. Bacchus, witnessing the miracle, repented and poured wine over Amethyst, staining her purple.

The early Egyptians believed that the amethyst possessed good powers, and placed the stones in the tombs of pharaohs.

However, amethyst is not the same everywhere. It must always be purple to be amethyst, it can and does have a wide range of purple shades. Different localities can produce a unique amethyst to that particular region or even to that particular mine. Experts can often identify the source mine that a particular amethyst came from. The key to this is the specimen's color, shape of crystal, inclusions, associations and character of formation.
